The LM311 devices defined as single high-speed voltage comparators. These devices are made to work with a broad range of power supply voltages, ranging from 15 volts for operational amplifiers to 5 volts for logic systems. Most TTL and MOS circuits are compatible with the output levels of LM311 devices. These comparators can switch voltages up to 50 V at 50 mA and can drive bulbs or relays. System ground can be separated from all inputs and outputs. Furthermore, the output drive loads using ground, VCC+, or VCC as a reference. The outputs of the LM311 can be wire-OR coupled since it has offset balancing and strobe capabilities. Under the condition, if the strobe remains low, indicate that the output is in the off state, regardless of the differential input.
The LM311 voltage comparators have input currents that are approximately a thousand times lower than traditional devices. The LM311 has a rapid reaction time of 165ns and operates in a temperature range of 0°C to +70°C. The LM311 has a PNP input stage that detects voltages near VCC–. Meanwhile, the device’s balance and strobe pins are utilized to control or trim the external offset. After a voltage difference on the input pins is noticed, the LM311’s input stage is followed by a very high gain stage that provides very quick response. The output stage, which consists of an open collector NPN (pulldown or low-side) transistor, comes next. Unlike most open drain comparators, this NPN output stage features an isolated emitter from VCC– . Thereby allowing device to set the VOL output value for collector output.
